Sculpting forms of animals
Hi,
A Jew may sculpt forms of animals for aesthetic purposes, and keep such forms; an example would be the eagle found atop the pole of many American flags.
Good morning, My now-deceased great aunt Rose, was quite an accomplished artist. She sculpted and made a beautiful bronze sculpture of a cat. I've declined to bring it into the home. It sits in my mother's home. Also, when I was in high school, I was enrolled in art/clay/sculpture class. I made a "self-portrait" sculpture of my head. I've also declined to bring that into my home. Would it be acceptable to have either one in my house? Thanks, Michael
There certainly are grounds to permit both of these; the former is aesthetic, and the latter is not full-body. Please see your local halachic authority for a ruling, though.
