Lulav ownership

Hi,

In order to fulfill the mitzvah of lulav/etrog on the first day of Succot, one must use his own set.

However, one may receive a set from someone else as a gift; one is permitted to give a gift on Yom Tov, if the gift will be used for a mitzvah.

(Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim 658)

Have a great day,
Mordechai

  1. Good evening,

If one "gifts" the lulav/esrog to someone, must it be verbalized or other "intended" as a gift. Or, must the recipient formally acknowledge that he/she is using this as a gift and that the lulav/esrog are not his/her own?

  2. Hi Michael,

It must be intended as a gift, yes, and ideally that comes with a verbal declaration.

However, no acknowledgement from the recipient is required.

    Be well,
    Mordechai
