Bathing on Shabbat

Hi,

One may not bathe in a tub on Shabbat, even in cold water. The sole exception is immersion in a mikvah for purification or as a special measure of piety.

(Rav Moshe Feinstein, Igrot Moshe Orach Chaim 3:87)

Have a great day,
Mordechai

  1. Why can't you take a shower in cold water on Shabbos if you're really hot? Lo gazru b'makom tzaar.

    1. I'm not sure one may apply the principle of מקום צער to this case. As a general rule, where a גזירה was made for a situation which normally involves צער, it is understood that the גזירה is meant to include whatever level of צער is normal. (See, for example, Shemiras Shabbos k'Hilchasah 34, footnote 7.)
