HaShem's Name in English

Hi,

In non-Hebrew languages, only a word which is dedicated as a Name for HaShem counts as a name. In English, that only applies to the word "God", such that this word should not be said without purpose.

(Rav Moshe Feinstein, Igrot Moshe Yoreh Deah 1:172)

Have a great day,
Mordechai

  1. I always thought God was a generic term. How are we allowed to take money into the bathroom if it has 'In God We Trust' written on it?

    1. Re: Coins - If it is within a wallet which is in a pocket, it should be fine, I believe.

    2. I should note, per the disclaimer atop this blog, that this is Rav Moshe's view, but others disagree.

  3. You wrote that "God" should not be said, but how about typed on a computer screen? Does Rav Moshe discuss that issue? Or anyone as far as you know?

And does this apply even in the context of Divrei Torah?

    Thanks.

This is discussed by halachic authorities, yes. See, for one, Ateret Paz I:2 Hearot Siman 13 He'arah 4.
