Hi,
In non-Hebrew languages, only a word which is dedicated as a Name for HaShem counts as a name. In English, that only applies to the word "God", such that this word should not be said without purpose.
(Rav Moshe Feinstein, Igrot Moshe Yoreh Deah 1:172)
Have a great day,
Mordechai

I always thought God was a generic term. How are we allowed to take money into the bathroom if it has 'In God We Trust' written on it?

ReplyDelete1. Re: Coins - If it is within a wallet which is in a pocket, it should be fine, I believe.
2. I should note, per the disclaimer atop this blog, that this is Rav Moshe's view, but others disagree.
You wrote that "God" should not be said, but how about typed on a computer screen? Does Rav Moshe discuss that issue? Or anyone as far as you know?
ReplyDeleteAnd does this apply even in the context of Divrei Torah?
Thanks.
Lost and Found-
ReplyDeleteThis is discussed by halachic authorities, yes. See, for one, Ateret Paz I:2 Hearot Siman 13 He'arah 4.
Any chance you could give me a synopsis? O:-)
ReplyDeleteIn three words: Not an issue.
ReplyDeleteHaha. Thanks!! That's what I thought but wanted to confirm. I appreciate it.
