Holding the cup during birkat hamazon

Hi,

When a mezuman is conducted for the birkat hamazon blessing after meals, and the leader concludes with a blessing upon a cup of wine, the leader should hold the cup from the start through the end, until reciting the blessing upon the cup of wine.

(Rivivot Ephraim 1:150:4)

Have a great day,
Mordechai

  1. What is the source, then, for putting down the cup of wine after the 4th b'racha? What's our source, all together, for bentsching over a cup of wine/grape juice?

  2. Hi Michael,

    1. Presumably, because people know that the section afterward is not truly part of the berachah.

    2. I'd recommend looking at the Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim 183, and commentaries there, for starters.
