A "borrowed" tallit

Hi,

One may use a tallit he finds in the synagogue or another public place, because it is assumed that people are happy to have others perform mitzvot with their property. However, one may only use it in the spot where he found it, and one may not do this on a regular basis (and one may not do it if the tallit is new).

If the tallit was originally folded, one must re-fold it when putting it back.

(Code of Jewish Law Orach Chaim 14:4; Mishneh Berurah 14:13)

Have a great day,
Mordechai

  1. Good morning, with regard to re-folding the tallis, is there a problem with refolding along the creases? I often see folks using the communal talleisim and then simply rolling them up-- I'm assuming that this is to avoid folding them along the creases. Any thoughts on this?

  2. Hi Michael,
If you are talking about Shabbos, then yes, that is the reason. Although they could also fold them without using the creases, and then fold them properly after maariv that night.
