Filling up with a small amount of bread

Hi,

We have noted that one does not recite the birkat hamazon blessing after eating unless he has eaten a minimum of an olive-sized amount of bread. This is true even if one is now entirely full.

(Rivivot Ephraim 1:145)

Have a good day,
Mordechai

  1. Dear Rabbi, is this referring to olive size that supposedly was back 2000 years ago? I understand kezayit is considered to be half egg, which is much larger than olive.

  2. Hello Lazar,

The debate about whether the olive measure (or any other measure) is meant to change or not is a well-trod debate, and there are strong views on multiple sides of the topic. One popular view is that an olive-sized amount of bread is half of a piece of bakery rye, from the middle (i.e. widest) part of the loaf.
