Hi,
If a Sefer Torah is propped up in a standing position on a bench, as many shuls do on a day when two Sifrei Torah are in use, then those who are in the room are required to stand.
(Rav Moshe Feinstein, Igrot Moshe Orach Chaim 1:38; and see Igrot Moshe Yoreh Deah 1:175)
Have a great day,
Mordechai

Where the Torah should be kept
Hi,
When a Sefer Torah is not in use, including during Kriat haTorah [Torah reading] when there are two Sifrei Torah and one is not in use, it must be kept in a place which is protected, and which accords it honor.
Therefore, a Torah should not be put in a location where everyone can access it easily, or where children who don't understand how to demonstrate respect could touch it.
(Rav Moshe Feinstein, Igrot Moshe Orach Chaim 1:38)
Have a great day,
Mordechai

Holding the Torah
Hi,
On days when we read from two Sifrei Torah, one Torah must be held while the other is in use. Out of respect for the Torah, one should not give it to a minor to hold; at the last, the holder should be of a certain intellectual maturity.
(Mishneh Berurah 147:29)
Have a great day,
Mordechai

New Topic: Wrapping up the Torah Scroll
Hello,
The lending topic was getting a little dry, so here's a change of pace: G'lilah, the practice of lifting and then wrapping the Torah after [or, in some communities, before] the Torah reading.
One may not touch the Torah parchment itself; one must use an intermediate material, to show respect for the scroll's contents.
(Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim 147:1; Mishneh Berurah 147:1)
Have a great day,
Mordechai

Holding a Sefer Torah
Hello,
Today we begin a new topic, in advance of Shavuot and the celebration of the presentation of the Torah at Har Sinai: The Public Torah reading.
One who is carrying a Sefer Torah (Torah scroll) should carry it in his right arm, representing the passage from Song of Songs (8:3) in which HaShem is described is embracing us with His "right", and representing the Torah's own statement (Deuteronomy 33:2) that HaShem carried the Torah to us in His "right."
(Rama Orach Chaim 134:2, Mishneh Berurah 134:14)
Have a great day,
Mordechai
